Relationship Help: Preventing Relationship Ruts

Relationship Help Quick Tip

We all fall into familiar, predictable patterns—this seems to be human nature. Patterns and routines give us comfort and a sense of control over our lives. Most of the time, you know what to expect from your spouse/partner and you’re able to anticipate his/her reactions to events (“He’ll like that…” “I know that’s going to upset her…”).

That’s the positive side of relationship routines.

Predictable patterns and routines can also be over-used– relied upon too much to the point that relationships start feeling dull, ho-hum, just more of the same (“You’re wearing those sweatpants again?” “I guess we’ll go for Chinese food like usual”).

That’s the down-side of relationship routines—our ingrained patterns become stale and turn into marital/relationship ruts.

If you’re sensing that your relationship patterns are starting to feel bland and lifeless, what is one thing you can do today that would be slightly different from the norm of your relationship routines?

One small change that might breathe life into your marriage/relationship?

Remember, over time small changes can make a big difference.
