We all fall into familiar, predictable patterns—this seems to be human nature. Patterns and routines give us comfort and a sense of control over our lives. Most of the time, you know what to expect from your spouse/partner and you’re able to anticipate his/her reactions to events (“He’ll like that…” “I know that’s going to upset her…”).
That’s the positive side of relationship routines.
Predictable patterns and routines can also be over-used– relied upon too much to the point that relationships start feeling dull, ho-hum, just more of the same (“You’re wearing those sweatpants again?” “I guess we’ll go for Chinese food like usual”).
That’s the down-side of relationship routines—our ingrained patterns become stale and turn into marital/relationship ruts.
